Buffaloâs Canalside transformed into a vibrant hub as the city marked the 200th anniversary of the Erie Canal, a project pivotal to Western New Yorkâs growth.
The celebration began with a historic marker unveiling, reflecting the canalâs lasting significance.
Special presentations highlighted the waterwayâs immense influence on commerce, transportation, and local communities.
Visitors explored the Seneca Chief, a striking replica of the vessel that sailed the canal on its 1825 debut, retracing Governor DeWitt Clintonâs legendary voyage.
Governor Kathy Hochul established the Erie Canal Bicentennial Commission, launching a slate of events through 2025, including the World Canals Conference in Buffalo.
The Buffalo History Museum also announced an interactive exhibit, Waterway of Change, set to open in May 2025, offering a dynamic look at the canalâs complex legacy and vision for the future.

Buffalo city leaders and residents broke ground on the new Lipsey Architecture Center Buffalo (LACB), set on the historic Richardson Olmsted Campus along Forest Avenue.
The 11,000-square-foot center will feature ten unique exhibit areas, exploring Buffaloâs architectural heritage and the visionaries who shaped it.
Judi Lipsey, LACB Board Chair, emphasized the centerâs mission to inspire and inform, calling it a vibrant addition to Buffaloâs âCultural Corridor,â near major institutions like the Buffalo History Museum and AKG Art Museum.
The project involves repurposing an 1875 kitchen building, seamlessly blending it with a modern addition designed by internationally recognized HĂśweler + Yoon Architecture.
Featuring an 18-foot-tall, scalloped glass facade, the design aims to highlight and honor the siteâs historic character.
Set to open in spring 2027, the LACB will boost cultural tourism and reinforce Buffaloâs commitment to architectural preservation. Read More... |
The Seneca Nation drives nearly $2 billion in annual economic impact across Western New York, according to a new report.
Independent analysis shows that in 2023, the Nation's businesses and operations supported over 8,000 jobs and generated $542.7 million in wages throughout the region.
Key employers include Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino, Seneca Allegany Resort & Casino, and Seneca Buffalo Creek Casino, alongside a portfolio of 34 diverse businesses that range from retail to energy and healthcare.
Recently, the Nation expanded its reach by acquiring the Rochester Knighthawks lacrosse team, strengthening ties to local sports.
The Nationâs revenue provides essential servicesâeducation, healthcare, housing, and moreâto 8,600 enrolled members.
A $7.625 million federal grant, announced by U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer, will fund a new transit hub in Irving, enhancing access and connectivity for nearly 8,000 residents.
